Our Teachers:
Fiona Wielhouwer - Supervisor
After Graduating from college in England with my N.N.E.B, I came to Canada where I obtained my ECE equivalency before embarking on an over 20 year career in the Early Childhood field.
I have been the Supervisor of Pearson Nursery school since September 2010. I am thrilled to be part of a Nursery school that encompasses all that a quality Nursery school should be .I feel incredibly fortunate to be in this line of work .It’s exciting to have the opportunity to fill young minds with knowledge, spark their curiosity and instil a love of learning even at a young age.
I reside in Burlington with my husband and two teenage daughters. When I am not working you will find me working out or running to keep fit.
Johanna Owen - Teacher
I graduated from Mohawk College with my E.C.E in 2000 and have been working in the field for the last 12 years. I was offered a position as the full time teacher to cover a maternity leave at Pearson for the 2011/12 school year, and was thrilled to be offered the full time position permanently and to be able to continue my teaching career here at Pearson. I look forward to many more years at Pearson and getting to know all the families. This was my first experience teaching in a co-op and I absolutely love it. It is so nice working together with parents to provide the best possible care for your children. I love my job teaching children and find it the most rewarding job, I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else. When I am not working I can be found spending time with my husband and our 2 wonderful children.
Alison MacKay - Teacher
I graduated from Mohawk College with my ECE in 2002 and have been working part time with the Pearson families since 2006. I have over 10 years of experience in the Early childcare field. I love to work with the children and the co-op experience that the families get from Pearson Nursery school. When I am not teaching I can be found spending time with my husband and our three wonderful children.
Our School History:
In 1977 a group of parents came together and formed a drop-in centre for mothers and preschoolers located in Pearson High School.
The committee realized the need for a quality co-operative (co-op) nursery school within the community.
A project was created to incorporate the nursery school into the high school curriculum. In the same way that you might have a biology lab for biology class, the Family Studies class had a nursery lab, namely Pearson Nursery Lab.
Along with grants and funding, the community of Burlington came together to volunteer, donate and make the equipment needed for the school.
Carole Holmes taught a Grade 11 Family Studies class in the high school. She had a background in both high school and childhood education. Karen Chan was hired as the first full time Early Education Supervisor. In addition, three parents would stay and participate in the classroom each day.
Over 30 years later, Pearson Community Co-operative Nursery school, operates with the same community spirit!
At Pearson Community Co-op, parents are an integral part of the operation of the school. The school is administered by a parent executive and run by parent committees. Each family has a committee responsibility or is a member of the executive and must attend General Business meetings through the school year.
The school is staffed by 3 registered Early Childhood Educators -two full time teachers and one part time teacher. The teachers are in charge of planning and implementing an educational program for the children. The teachers also provide orientation and training to the participating parents who assist in the classroom.
Pearson has evolved and continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of the preschoolers and their families in Burlington
