This Week at Pearson: Santa Store, Decorating Gingerbread Houses & Pajama Day!

Monday and Tuesday: The Santa Store

The holiday season is finally here,
Full of joy and festive cheer.
With gifts for Mommy and Daddy,
And so much more.
We're going shopping,
At the Santa Store!

Children will be shopping for special gifts for their loved ones Monday and Tuesday at the Santa Store. A special thanks to all the little elves who have been working hard in Santa's workshop to stock up the shelves. Happy shopping!

Thursday and Friday: Decorating Gingerbread Houses & Pajama Day

I made a house of gingerbread,
It was so sugary sweet.
It took me all day long to make,
But it lasted just a week.
Monday I ate the ceiling,
Tuesday I ate the door.
Wednesday I ate the windows,
Thursday I ate the floor.
Friday I ate all four walls,
Saturday I ate the lawn.
Sunday I licked up all the crumbs,
My gingerbread house is gone!

Children will be decorating gingerbread houses this Thursday and Friday. We'll see how many decorations actually make it onto the houses instead of in little tummies! It's also pajama day so there's no need to get dressed! Children are invited to come to school in their pajamas! Pajamas all day - yay!

Book of the Week: Gingerbread Baby

Can you believe it’s December already? The holidays are nearly upon us, and what better way to begin the celebrations than with Jan Brett’s modern classic, Gingerbread Baby.

Young Matti can’t stop himself from peeking in on his gingerbread boy while it bakes in the oven. When he opens the door, the Gingerbread Baby makes its escape:

"I am the Gingerbread Baby,
Fresh from the pan,
If you want me,
Catch me if you can!"

So begins the rollicking chase around Matti's kitchen and out into the countryside as Matti's mother, his father, the cat and the dog run after the boisterous, bouncing Gingerbread Baby, only to be joined by a flock of goats, Martha and Madeline, a crowd of villagers and more.

Brett's lively and beautifully detailed paintings catch the spirit of a favorite old tale through her cheeky little Gingerbread Baby and the colorful cast of characters who pursue him through a tiny Swiss village.

Book of the Week: Portside Pirates

“It’s the pirate’s life for me!”

Transportation month is walking the plank as we take to the high seas for our Book of the Week, Portside Pirates, by Oscar Seaworthy.

Illustrated by Debbie Harter and sung by Mark Collins, this charming book takes a young boy over the deep blue sea with a lively band of buccaneers. He visits Timbuktu, weathers a storm, gets tossed overboard, and discovers a wonderful treasure.

A big THANK YOU to our silent auction donors!

Each year, our fundraising committee works hard to plan and execute a silent auction in support of our wonderful community nursery school. We are very pleased to share that over $7500 was raised at Pearson Community Co-op Nursery School's recent fundraising event - surpassing our goal! Thanks to the generosity of our donors as well as the community members who bid on items, Pearson kids will have an even more enriching preschool experience. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to the success of this event!

The funds raised will go towards the greening of bare space in our outdoor playground, as well as the addition of garden planters for the children to grow and care for.  New electronic equipment and yoga mats are among many other key upgrades planned for the classroom.

Please join us in thanking our donors who made this year's auction such a success. Your kindness and support are appreciated today and always!

Book of the Week: We All Go Travelling By

Transportation month gets colourful as we read and sing along to our Book of the Week, Sheena Roberts' We All Go Travelling By, illustrated by Siobhan Bell.

Canadian children’s music legend Fred Penner sings the catchy song as we accompany a yellow bus on its way to school. Different vehicles are paired with a colour to make this book both educational and fun.

Take a sneak peek at We All Go Travelling By with this YouTube video:

Book of the Week: Down By the Station

We’re continuing our transportation theme with this week’s Book of the Week.

Based on the popular children’s song, Down By the Station, illustrated by Jess Stockholm, takes a lively tour of the train station, visiting engines, buses, taxis and more. Your child will bounce along to the familiar tune while enjoying the colourful illustrations.

The history of this song is an interesting one. According to Wikipedia, it was first written down by jazz legend Slim Gaillard and Lee Ricks in 1948, though the lyrics appear to be older than that. The song was made popular by Tommy Dorsey. Hear his version here—slightly different than the Sharon, Lois and Bram version most of us are familiar with!

(And in case you are wondering, “pufferbelly” is an old, informal word for a steam locomotive.)

Book of the Week: Driving My Tractor

Can you believe we’re into November already?

This month, the children are leaving the farm behind and turning their attention to transportation as we explore trains, buses and boats in our books of the week. But before we leave the farm completely, we’ll take one last look with Jan Dobbin’s Driving my Tractor, illustrated by David Sim.

Chug along with a farmer and his tractor on this multi-season animal adventure. This colorful book combines simple counting instruction with humor, repetition and rhythm to encourage learning fun.

Driving my Tractor may even bring back memories of your child’s visit to Frootogo, where they rode on the trailer of a tractor to the pumpkin patch!

Like similar books last month, Driving my Tractor comes with a CD and a cute music video. Check it out below.
