Mouse Paint

What happens when three little white mice climb into different pots of paint? Adventure!

Our kids have been having a blast reading this week's featured book, Mouse Paint, and discovering all of the fun that can happen with colours.

In addition to reading Mouse Paint in circle, there have been colourful crafts to go along with the book. Did your child make a painted mouse this week? Which colour combination did they choose?

Today was the first of two bowling trips at Pearson Community Co-op Nursery School - the kids (and teachers) had so much fun! What an awesome experience. Thanks to all of our duty parents and volunteers for their help.

If you're stopping by our blog as a prospective parent, please note that registration/open house days are this weekend - please contact the school for more details! We'd love to see you there.

All the best, Pearson families - have a great weekend!

Winter Dressing

As the snow continues to fall, here is a reminder about winter dressing from Fiona and the rest of the Pearson Community Cop-op Nursery School team - let's all hope for warmer temperatures soon! And until then...

Winter Dressing:

As most nursery school teachers or ECEs would agree, once the winter weather hits we are excited for the prospect of playing in the snow...but dreading the task of getting preschoolers dressed in full winter gear!!

At Pearson, we encourage as much independence as possible and start with asking that all parents label their child’s clothes with labels so we can tell whose are whose. Jackets come in many different colours, but snow pants tend to be similar colours. It makes it so much easier when things are labelled, and also helps the children to recognize their own name. Our cubby area can become a sea of winter gear, so we divide the group into two smaller groups and get dressed with snow pants and jackets in the 2 classrooms. Armed with their jacket and snow pants, two items of clothing often seems less overwhelming to a 3 year old. You would be amazed at how many children can get themselves well on the way to putting on snow pants with minimal help. At Pearson, we do the jacket flip, which begins with lying the jacket on the floor. We teach them toes by the tag, hands in and flip. Magic!!

After these are put on then off to the cubbies we go to get on the rest of their winter clothes.

The kids get dressed in this order:

Thanks, and have a great weekend!

The Wonders of Sensory Play (post contributed by Fiona Wielhouwer)

One area of learning through play is through sensory experiences within the classroom. Children are far more engaged in learning when we as teachers engage their senses. If we want to teach a group of children about the importance of wearing mitts in the winter or how animals in the polar regions stay warm, filling the sensory tub with ice or snow and letting them touch with different kinds of mitts will help them to understand some of these concepts. Experiencing different activities through their own senses will have a great impact on their learning.

You may be surprised how beneficial sensory play can be, and how much can be learnt by young minds when given the chance to play with a variety of tactile activities. Here are just some of the reasons why we include sensory play in our program planning:
  •       It increases language
  •       It is open-ended - there is no right or wrong way to experience sensory play, subsequently building confidence
  •       Begin to learn the scientific process through questioning, investigating and drawing conclusions
  •       Develops fine motor skills
  •       Engages children in pretend play
  •       Develops social skills
  •       Encourages self-control.
  •       It's fun!

Here are some of our children at Pearson Nursery enjoying some sensory experiences so far this year.

Chicka Chicka 1-2-3!

Last week was a great one at Pearson Community Co-op Nursery School, with our kids enjoying Chicka Chicka Boom Boom at story time AND as a part of our creative table. Did your kids bring home an alphabet tree? This colourful, educational craft project turned out beautifully and was a big hit with the kids.

The fun and learning continues this week as we read Chicka Chicka 1-2-3!

If you're interested in hearing the song and rhythms associated with this book, check it out on YouTube - there are a ton of videos featuring both Chicka Chicka books (including a Fred Penner version, if you want to get nostalgic about your own childhood).

We hope you are all well, and will see you at the general meeting - see more info on that in the previous post, below! Thanks for reading, and check back soon - we have a guest post coming from one of our nursery school teachers, and lots more.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

Welcome back to Pearson Community Co-op Nursery School's blog! This week's book selection is a very popular alphabet adventure that is likely a favourite of many Pearson families already - Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.

"A told B, and B told C, "I'll meet you at the top of the coconut tree..."

We hope your kids enjoyed beach day last week, even if it was too cold for some of our classes to go outside. Please remember to send snow pants and other weather-appropriate clothing on school days - we are hoping to get outside as much as possible!

All the best for a great week. Take care, everyone!
